No Participation Is Not Zero in War and CWL Statistics
Learn how ClansHQ distinguishes no participation from recorded results in Clash of Clans War and CWL aggregates for clearer member analysis.

Zero can be a meaningful Clash of Clans war result. A player may attack and earn zero stars, finish with zero Net Gain, or record a zero percent rate for a particular outcome. But when a member did not participate at all, showing another zero tells a different story from what actually happened in a Clan War or CWL statistics table.
ClansHQ now displays a dash (-) instead of zero in War and CWL aggregate statistics when a member has no recorded participation. In short: a dash means there is no result to calculate; a number means there is a result based on recorded participation. Individual War and CWL event cells do not change.
What does a dash mean in Clash of Clans War and CWL statistics?
In aggregate columns, a dash means the member has no recorded attack opportunity in the data included by that view. It does not mean the member attacked and scored zero. The included data can also reflect the table setting that excludes the latest War or CWL round from calculations.
The distinction is simple:
-means there is no recorded participation to summarize- A number means ClansHQ has a recorded or calculated result, including when that result is zero
ClansHQ applies this distinction to member aggregates in both its regular Clan War tracker and Clan War League tracker.
Why no participation should not count as zero
Consider two members in a War performance table:
- One member played and finished with a Net Gain of
0 - Another member did not play any of the included wars
If both rows display 0, they appear equivalent. In reality, one is a neutral result based on participation and the other has no performance result to evaluate. Showing - for the second member makes that difference clear at a glance.
This matters across more than Net Gain. A zero-star attack, a zero-percent outcome rate, and an average of zero can all be valid results. Treating absence as zero can make a roster comparison less clear and may lead a leader to interpret missing data as poor performance.
Where ClansHQ displays a dash
The no-participation indicator is used across the aggregate areas of the War and CWL tables.
An aggregate is a total, average, rate, count, or combined metric calculated from multiple War or CWL records. Individual event cells show the underlying war or round rather than the combined result.
War Summary
When a member has no recorded attack opportunities in the included War records, the aggregate row displays - for statistics such as:
- Average Stars
- Average New Stars
- Missed attacks
- Net Gain
- Offensive star rates
- Defensive star rates
War Breakdown
War Breakdown keeps its individual war columns unchanged. The dash appears only in the aggregate columns beside the member name when there is no participation to summarize. Leaders can still inspect lineup status, missed attacks, and attack results in the original war-by-war cells.
CWL Overall Summary
In the all-seasons CWL Overall Summary, members without recorded participation in the available history display - across aggregate performance statistics, including Average New Stars, Missed, Net Gain, and offensive and defensive star rates.
CWL Net Gain Trend
The CWL Net Gain Trend already distinguishes a season without participation from a season with an actual Net Gain of zero. The overall Net Gain aggregate now follows the same rule, giving the full row a consistent meaning.
CWL Breakdown
In CWL Breakdown, the aggregate Wars, Total, and Average columns display - when the member has no recorded participation in the selected season data. Individual round cells remain unchanged, so leaders can still review the available round-level context directly.
How War and CWL sorting handles no participation
A dash is not a numeric score, so it should not be ranked as though it were zero. In ClansHQ, members without participation stay below members with calculated results when an aggregate statistic is sorted.
That behavior applies in both directions:
- When sorting from highest to lowest, members with calculated results appear first and dashes appear last
- When sorting from lowest to highest, members with calculated results still appear first and dashes remain last
Calculated results stay in their normal numeric order. Members without data do not appear to be the clan's lowest performers.
Member-rank sorting and saved highlight-group placement continue to work independently of this rule.
A clearer workflow for clan leaders
The change supports a straightforward review process:
- Open the War or CWL table for your clan.
- Use Summary to compare aggregate member performance.
- Treat
-as no participation, not a score. - Sort a metric to compare members with recorded participation first.
- Switch to Breakdown to inspect the individual wars or CWL rounds behind an aggregate.
This is especially helpful when evaluating lineup candidates. A leader can distinguish players who participated and recorded a low result from players who simply were not selected or have no included history. That is better context for a conversation, but it is still not a verdict on either member.
Frequently asked questions about missing War and CWL data
Does a dash affect War or CWL calculations?
No. The dash is only a visual treatment for missing participation. It does not change how ClansHQ calculates stars, new stars, destruction, missed attacks, averages, rates, or Net Gain.
Existing calculated values are unchanged. The underlying War and CWL records are also unchanged; only aggregate cells without participation use the clearer symbol.
Is a dash the same as a missed attack?
No. A missed attack is a recorded opportunity that was not used, and ClansHQ includes it in the relevant Missed aggregate. A dash means there was no recorded participation to summarize in that aggregate scope.
Does zero still appear in Clash of Clans war stats?
Yes. ClansHQ continues to show zero when zero is the real result, including a zero-star attack or a calculated Net Gain of zero. The dash is reserved for missing participation.
Do individual War and CWL cells display a dash?
This update does not replace individual event-cell content with a dash. War-by-war and round-by-round cells keep their existing states and values; the no-participation dash is used for aggregate results.
Use performance data with context
Participation is one part of clan management. Lineup size, Town Hall matchups, assigned targets, strategy, availability, and connection issues can all affect the records shown in a War or CWL table.
Use the dash to recognize when there is no result to compare. Then combine actual statistics with the individual event history and communication with the member before making lineup decisions.
